Chessist Cabralis leads Arima Boys RC
TRINIDAD and Tobago Under-ten chess champion Keron Cabralis makes Arima Boys’ RC the favourites in the annual First Citizens Bank (FCB) Primary Schools Chess Championship. The tournament takes place at Holy Name Convent, Queen’s Park East in Port-of-Spain on Saturday and Sunday. Cabralis is creating waves in local chess with victories against top junior and senior players. At his tender age Cabralis is set to become the first junior from Trinidad and Tobago to gain 50 percent (5.5 points from 11 matches) in a World Youth Chess Championship. This was achieved just two months ago in Belfort, France where he represented TT in the Under- ten category. Also in the Arima Boys’ RC team are Aaron Baksh and Aaron Koon-Koon. However, strong competition is expected from Holy Name Prep (Port-of-Spain) who have in their line-up Vandoff Smith, the second rated Under-ten champion and Aaron Bachew. Another Port-of-Spain school — Blackman’s Private, Christian Academy from Arima and Montrose Vedic from Chaguanas will all be challenging strongly for the FCB Trophy. Last year’s winner St Monica’s have lost most of their top players to secondary schools and will be hard-pressed to retain the top prize. The annual primary school tournament, organised by the Trinidad and Tobago Chess Academy and Promotions and sponsored by First Citizen Bank, will be followed by the Secondary Schools Championship at the end of October.
