AARON EDWARDS is expected to be the one to beat when the 2005 Charles Candy National Aged Group Table Tennis Championship takes place at the Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo this weekend. Edwards has been in great form recently with his latest achievement coming at the Tobago Open Championship when he beat Anthony Brown in the final last week. Brown will not take part in the Catch tournament as a senior player but is rated second among the seniors when he was beaten. Edwards will contest the Under-21 Division for young adults and will face a challenging field this weekend. His toughest test is expected from defending champion Kellon Roach, who has shown good form to date, as well as against talented national player Curtis Humphrey. Edwards, Roach and Humphrey all gave impressive performances at the recent Caribbean Junior Table Tennis Championship in neighbouring Barbados. At a launch of the tournament yesterday at Corbin Communication in Woodbrook yesterday, Charles Candy’s Sales Manager Ricardo Bideshi revealed their ninth year of sponsorship amounting to $50,000. According to Bideshi this year’s entries are approaching 400 as opposed to last year’s 251 participants. He said trophies, medals and hampers will be given out to the top four finishers in each category with special prizes for the first time as reward for exceptional performances. This year’s sponsorship has been an increase from last year and will cover the Under-21s for Young Adults; the Under-18s for Juniors; the Under-15s division for Cadets; the Under-13s for Pre-teens; and the Under-10 division for Tinymites. Roach, Edwards and Humphrey are expected to produce exciting table tennis in the Under-18 division and the feature Under-21s, as they all bid to be crown young kings in Trinidad and Tobago. All the defending champions of the respective divisions have also confirmed their participation for the two-day championship. There has also been an increase in participation for the aged-group competition and Charles Candy representative Bideshi said yesterday it is indicative of the rapid growth in the sport in recent times.
