Man killed in highway crash

A Guaracara man was killed yesterday when the truck in which he was a passenger slammed into a parked garbage truck at Piarco Junction, Churchill Roosevelt Highway.

Harricharan Chan, 48, of Tabaquite Road, died on the spot.

Chan and the driver were on their way to National Quarries at Churchill Roosevelt Highway for gravel at 5.30 am, when the truck smashed into the back of a garbage truck. The driver of the garbage truck said he was experiencing problems with the radiator and could not move the vehicle. He was not injured in the accident.

The driver of Chan’s truck swerved to avoid the garbage truck, but rear-ended the vehicle. He appeared to be uninjured, but after visiting the Arouca Police Station to file a report, he complained of chest pains and left for medical attention at the Arima District Hospital.

Chan’s body was taken to the Forensic Science Centre.

Cpl Mendoza of the Arouca Police Station is continuing investigations.
