Sarwan century but Guyana tie

BRIDGETOWN: Fast bowler Reon King took a wicket off the last ball of the match yesterday to earn Guyana a thrilling tie against the Leeward Islands in a high-scoring, second-round match in the President’s Cup limited overs regional championship at Windward Cricket Club.

Ramnaresh Sarwan’s 113, his second straight hundred in the tournament, piloted Guyana to a challenging 291 for five off 50 overs.

He was supported in century stands by fellow West Indian representatives, Narsingh Deonarine and captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who both made 52.

But the Leewards were always on target to chase down the formidable target through confident half centuries from opener Austin Richards Jr., Runako Morton and skipper Sylvester Joseph.

Richards top-scored with 77 while Morton (68) and Joseph (64) paced the middle order.

Left-hander Richards, utilised as the "supersub," cracked seven fours and two sixes off 83 balls.

Morton’s 68 off 90 deliveries was spiced with a four and two sixes.

Joseph made 64 off 54 balls with a four and four big sixes.

The Leewards needed 12 runs off the last two overs and reduced that to three runs off the last four balls to be in command. But they could not complete the victory.

Omari Banks was run out, while Carl Simon and Tonito Willett both scampered singles to set up a last ball finale.

With one run needed off the last ball, King became Guyana’s hero as he dismissed Simon to leave the scores level.

Simon snicked to wicket-keeper Derwin Christian to leave the Guyanese contingent celebrating.

Both teams remain unbeaten after winning their opening matches on Monday.

Earlier, Sarwan cracked five fours and two sixes as his second century on consecutive days spanned 134 balls.

Left-hander Deonarine blasted two fours and a six in a 67-ball knock, while Chanderpaul’s innings lasted just 44 deliveries.
