Lions, Crabs remain in Super League hunt

WITH only three rounds of matches left in the Sportworld Super League, only 2004 champs, the “Eastern Lions” Joe Public and Crab Connection remain in the hunt for the $75,000 jackpot. Joe Public, with an extra game in hand, have 45 points, five more than the “Crabs”, who have two matches outstanding, with Police a distant third with 36. In league action yesterday, Joe Public fought off a late surge from Police to prevail 4-3 at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella. Jamaican striker Roen Nelson netted a pair for the Lions, in the 25th and 76th minutes, with countryman Wolry Wolfe on target in the 46th and an own goal from ex-national Under-17 defender Devon Bristol in the 65th.

The prolific Neri Joseph was on the mark in the 42nd, while Dwight Elliott added two, in the 88th and 89th, but it was a little too late for the lawmen. At the Larry Gomes Stadium in Arima, the “Crabs” got an 86 th minute winner by veteran Warren Butler to edge Superstar Rangers 3-2. Todd Ryan put Rangers ahead in the 28th before Rennie Britto responded with a double for Connection, in the 61st and 65th. Colin Roberts levelled the scores at 2-2 in the 67th before Butler got the winner for “Crabs”. The day’s other contest saw M&M Harvard holding Angostura 1976 FC Phoenix to a goalless draw at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.

On Saturday, Stokely Vale trounced Maraval Youth Academy 7-2 at the Plymouth Recreation Ground. Curtis Job notched a hat-trick for the hosts (25th, 58th and 78th) with one apiece from Devon Leacock (62nd), Nicholas John (72nd), Kerron Phillips (84th) and Darron Williams (88th), while McKell Julien had an early double for Maraval in the 24th and 29th. Tomorrow, in a rescheduled match, PLIPDECO Caroni will host Couva Players United at Gilbert Park, Couva at 4 pm.
