Boynes, ‘Citizens’ salute Warriors

SPORT and Youth Affairs minister Roger Boynes has extended congratulations to the Trinidad and Tobago football team for their 2-1 win over Mexico on Wednesday night at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, to secure fourth place in the CONCACAF World Cup Final Round qualifiers.

Victory on Wednesday night will see the TT lads facing Bahrain in a home-and-away play-off in November for a place at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

"I regard (Wednesday) night’s performance among the best ever played by a Trinidad and Tobago football team," said Boynes. "Undoubtedly, the team was buoyed by its recent displays of courage and determination, which included an emphatic win against Guatemala here and victory in an away match against Panama.

"In a match that we had to win, all of Trinidad and Tobago watched as you rode the wave of the nation’s expectations and adeptly accomplished the task, but more importantly, played the beautiful game without fear," Boynes continued.

"Every single Warrior played his role to perfection (on Wednesday) night and it is clear that as a unit, you have now moved into another realm of character.

"Every citizen in Trinidad and Tobago can and should look to you for inspiration, and be spurred on by you to excellence in all endeavours," Boynes added.

Also joining in the celebratory mood is the Citizens for a Better Trinidad and Tobago (CBTT), who said "the Trinidad and Tobago’s football team produced one of the best performances ever and as a result created one of the greatest moments in our sporting history."

Head of the CBTT Harrack Balramsingh praised the estimated 24,000 spectators who gave constant vocal support to the team.

"We must all thank the players for bringing victory to Trinidad and Tobago and, by extension, great joy and happiness to their fellow citizens," he ended.
