Romany, Homer splash to records
WALTER ROMANY of Blue Dolphins and Christian Homer of St Michael’s Stingray swam to national records on the first day of the two-day 16th Annual La Joya Torpedoes Inter-Club Swim Meet at La Joya, St Joseph on Saturday. Homer, a stand-out for Trinidad and Tobago at the Carifta Swimming Championships earlier this year, was the first to re-write the record books when he splashed to a 30.35 second timing in the Boys 11-12 50m backstroke. The time coincidentally erased Romany’s mark of 30.42 seconds established last year. Romany’s record came in the same event for the Boys 13-14 division. He covered two lengths of the pool in 29.40 that eclipsed Andre Schamber’s 2003 mark of 29.44 seconds.. Earlier Homer, trained by top coach Edmund Pouchet, steered himself to victory in the 200m free in 2:11.38 before claiming the 100m breaststroke (1:14.33) and earning silver in the 100m butterfly (1:04.12) and 100 m back (1:07.47). Romany, coached by Pouchet’s son Shawn, claimed victories in the 200m free (2:11.00), 100m fly (1:03.01) and 100m back (1:05.27). The competition was scheduled to end yesterday.
