Browne: KFC final not fair

GUYANA’s nailbiting victory on Sunday in the final of the regional KFC Cup limited overs tournament has left Barbados captain Courtney Browne very upset.

Browne is reported to have said on Guyana radio after the final at Bourda Oval in Georgetown that the match was "not fair."

However he never offered any details.

But he fired off a nugget of a quote when asked if he planned to write a report to the West Indies Cricket Board.

"I don’t think that anything is done with reports in the Caribbean. It is really a waste of time; it would just be a waste of my time," Browne reportedly said.

A Sewnarine Chattergoon ton steered Guyana to a seven-run win on the Duckworth Lewis System against the Barbadians.

Needing 250 for victory, the hosts reached 247 for seven off 49 overs in fading light, with Chattergoon leading the way with a well-played 119.

"We had a platform set up to score 280 to 290, but we fell down," Browne said. "We had a very good start from the openers, but we didn’t capitalise on it. We lost wickets at crucial stages

"When we were in the field, I never gave up. I knew once we got Shiv and Sarwan, I knew we were in with a chance, but you can’t take anything away from Chattergoon."

Barbados were given a century opening stand, but it took Martin Nurse and Kurt Wilkinson more than half the overs to put together 104. Chattergoon’s 119 was punctuated with 14 sweetly timed boundaries and he faced 140 balls. Chattergoon, who was subsequently named "Man of the Match" and "Man of the Finals" (semi-final and final), and his opening partner Arjune, gave Guyana a solid opening stand of 92 in 21 overs.

Browne, a former West Indies wicketkeeper is thought to be bitter about the introduction of the Duckworth/Lewis System in the latter stages of the match when fading light proved to be the deciding factor.

At that stage Barbados had done well to storm back into contention after Guyana seemed to be cruising to victory. However a Barbados victory was not to be as umpires Norman Malcolm and Billy Doctrove halted the match in the descending gloom of Georgetown.
