San Juan, ‘Pres’ scent titles
SAN JUAN and Presentation can capture the East and Central Zone trophies following today’s round of matches in the British Gas Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL). San Juan, who have won all ten matches so far, only need a draw against the visiting "Blue Thunder" El Dorado, at Bourg Mulatresse, to gain the East Zone title. In other East Zone matches, Malabar will host neighbours Arima at the Larry Gomes Stadium while St George’s, who have defaulted their last two matches against St Augustine and "El Do" respectively, will meet Hillview at the St George’s Ground. An anticlimax is expected in the Central Zone, with Presentation virtually assured of retaining their title if they earn at least a draw against Union Claxton Bay, in the first of back-to-back matches, at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva. If "Pres" is beaten by the bottom-placed Claxton Bay, then Carapichaima can lift the crown if they can defeat hosts Chaguanas by at least eight clear goals. In the other match at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Marabella will face Tabaquite. Naparima, who have retained their South crown, can begin their preparations for the "Big 5" competition when they face Mayaro at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella. Princes Town will be hosting Vessigny while Moruga will meet the visiting Fyzabad. Mucurapo can take advantage of a bye to leaders Fatima by reclaiming the top spot in the North Zone today. The 2004 winners are three points behind in second place, and will need to defeat hosts QRC by at least three clear goals to gain the edge over neighbours Fatima. The "Westmoorings Tigers" will host the struggling St Mary’s while Tranquility would be looking to avoid the ignominy of losing all their 12 matches when they meet Malick at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo. Two matches are on the cards in the sister isle Tobago, with leaders Signal Hill hosting Bishop’s while Roxborough welcomes Scarborough. Today’s matches will kick off at 3.45 pm with the exception of the double-header at Couva, which will get going at 3 o’clock.
