David Noel beaten in title fight

TRINIDAD and Tobago boxer David Noel, the nephew of former national boxer and world title champion Claude Noel has been placed on medication after receiving injuries to his right and left elbows and his right shoulder.

The younger Noel succumbed to an embarrassing defeat at the weekend when he failed to answer the bell for the sixth round because of the severity of the injuries he received during the Fedecaribe title fight with Panamanian Tito Mendoza.

The light heavyweight title bout was staged in Panama City on Saturday. The official result was a Technical Knock Out (TKO).

According to Dr Calvin Inalsingh, a member of the Boxing Board of Control, the talented Noel will be out for six weeks. He has been advised that he can do light work-outs but should not undertake any serious physical activity.

Noel had travelled to Panama with a slight injury to his left elbow which got worse during the fight Inalsingh said.

Noel was expecting to repeat his success against another Panamanian fighter, Guillermo Jones for the Fedelatin title back in 1997 at a WBA Knock Out Drug Games Festival.

But in a rematch just months later, the Tobagonian was defeated.

Noel went into the fight with a record of 27 wins which included 17 knock-outs, eight losses and one draw.

However Mendoza, the home town boy showed his superiority upping his record to 32 wins, including 24 knock-outs, seven losses. The match-up was the first light heavyweight battle for either fighter.

Mendoza recently fought Luis Pineda for the Fedelatin cruiserweight title and lost by a unanimous decision.

He also lost to Syd Vanderpool in the super middleweight class.
