Ames 44th in world rankings

NEW YORK: Trinidad and Tobago’s golf ace Stephen Ames is showing as the 44th rated player in the latest world rankings released this week.

After his solid 10th place finish at the WGC-American Express championships two weeks ago, Ames missed last weekend’s tour event and maintains the floating 40s position he has held in recent months. The 41-year-old San Fernando native had climbed to an all-time high 17th in the world ratings last year during a bumper season in which he won his maiden US PGA Tour event — the Cialis Open in July — logged 11 top-10 finishes to be one of the most consistent players on the tour.

He earned US$3.30 million last year but has struggled this year to rekindle his 2004 form, achieving only three top-10 finishes so far this season — sixth at the MCI Heritage, seventh at the Bell Canadian Open, and 10th at the American Express.

World Golf Rankings:1 Tiger Woods (USA); 2 Vijay Singh (Fiji); 3 Phil Mickelson (USA);

4 Retief Goosen (South Africa); 5 Ernie Els (South Africa); 6 Sergio Garcia (Spain); 7 Jim Furyk (USA); 8 Adam Scott (Australia); 9 Chris DiMarco (USA); 10 David Toms (USA); 44th Stephen Ames (TT).
