Mayaro netball shoots off
THE MAYARO Netball League shoots off their 2005 tournament with the traditional march past of teams and an American-style competition featuring all ten participating teams at the Mayaro Public Netball Courts at 4 pm on Sunday. The tournament, which features play in league and knockout competition is sponsored once again by energy company bpTT, whose home community is Mayaro. Following the march past on Sunday, all teams will participate in a five-minute knockout competition with the finals to be played over ten minutes. Defending league champions Mayaro Netters have thrown down the gauntlet to their rivals for the 2005 crown in what is expected to be a very competitive tournament. Allyson Philbert, a member of the organising committee of the Mayaro Netball Association, said yesterday that the tournament, now in their 16th year, picked up momentum with the sponsorship of bpTT. "The standard of play has been very high in recent years. With the incentives from bpTT, more and more players are taking up the game. There are attractive cash prizes and trophies at stake for the winning teams and outstanding players, and also the promising youngsters. "We hope to make Mayaro netball a force to be reckoned with in Trinidad and Tobago," Philbert said.
