Army collect top b-ball prizes
DEFENCE Force basketballers were on Friday night awarded for their exploits in the North Zone Basketball League at an award ceremony at the VIP Lounge of the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo. The Army team walked away with the $10,000 cash award for winning the Men’s First Division and their top player Stephen "Lighter" Lewis was voted the Most Valuable Player in the competition. At a ceremony to honour the players and the teams for their performances, members of the various teams came out dressed in their gowns to receive awards for the last few months of hard work on the courts. Detour Shak Attack earned themselves the runners-up prize of $5,000 while the big National Flour Mills claimed third in the Men’s First Division and received $2,500. Sports reporter Rachel Thompson collected the award for the Most Valuable Player among the women, after she almost single-handedly guided Courts Horizon to the winners’ row. Horizons are coached by her colleague Keith Clement. Clement was recognised for the role he played during the season and received the Coach of the Year in the Women’s Division. Wesley Gomes of the Defence Force had been the obvious choice for the Coach of the Year in the Men’s First Division. Horizons collected the winners’ cheque of $5,000 and the Army Coast-Guard women received the runners-up prize of $2,000. The third place team pocketed $1,000 and products courtesy sponsors Supligen. In the Men’s Second was topped by Division Detour Shak Attack while Macoya secured the runners-up position in the league. Shornell Pompey who played the biggest role in the Shak Attack success was named the Most Valuable Player of the division to the delight of fans, players and friends who attended the ceremony. Third position in the men’s second division went to Supligen Crusaders. At the awards function a number of special prizes were also handed out to persons who have played important roles in the competition. Among them was Richard Fakoory for administration, and Justin "Hughie" Telesford.
