King rules over Horizon women

FRESH FROM being named the Most Valuable Player of the Women’s Division in the recent Supligen North Zone Basketball Tournament, Rachel Thom-pson-King gave another impressive display.

She guided Courts Horizons to an impressive win 55-47 over the Blue Ribbon Brian Chase Academy in the Sportworld Basketball League on Saturday night.

Thompson-King led the way with 21 points and eight turnovers while Mahelia Simpson added 11 as Horizons finished the match eight points ahead of their counterparts at the Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo.

Another King — Kathy Ann King — also made a mark in the match as she led a fight back for the Brian Chase Academy in the last two sessions.

King had 11 points on Saturday, the same as her team-mate Allison Young as Brian Chase Academy won the first two quarters 13-11 and 21-19.

Early in the match Horizons struggled to find the form that led them to the title in the women’s division of the North Zone Supligen Basketball League.

This was until the third quarter when the lanky but effective Chezelle Griffith turned the match around in the final two sessions.

Griffith had seven points in the match to complement the performances of Thompson-King and Simpson as Horizon took the third and fourth quarters 44-29 and 55-47.

In another match Unit Trust Maloney Pacers got the better of the Marabella Raptors 93-83 in a men’s encounter at the same venue.

Derreck Boxhill had a game-high 29 points and his team-mate Miguel Williams scored 18 as the Pacers led all quarters. The Pacers led the first two periods 32-17 and 53-27, although the Raptor’s Ako Pascal gave some strong resistance along with Damien Caton who also had the Pacers defence busy.

Both Pascal and Caton were impressive in scoring 24 points apiece in the losing effort for the Raptors but will be better for the experience.

The Pacers continued their dominance in taking the third quarter 77-48 and finished the final stanza 93-83 with the assistance of Maxime Perreira, who had ten points including two three- pointers and three assists.
