Lawrence scores but Wrexham lose

LONDON: Several Caribbean internationals, headed by St Kitts & Nevis forward Tesfaye Bramble, featured prominently on the score sheets in action throughout England on Saturday.

Struggling Stockport County were smiling broadly, after Bramble netted twice to help them make a stirring comeback and win 4-2 over Northampton in the League 2 Championship (Division 3).

Bramble gave Stockport the lead in the eighth minute, but the home team squandered their early advantage letting in goals from Junior Mendes and Scott McGleish to trail 1-2 at half-time.

Stockport rang the changes at half-time and hit three after the interval.

Winger Harpal Singh fired under the body of Northampton goalkeeper Lee Harper, before Bramble latched on to a pass from Jermaine Easter, before rounding Harper to give his side a 3-2 lead.

Stockport skipper Keith Briggs made sure of the points with a superb strike which left Harper no chance. Elsewhere in League 2, Wrexham wasted an early goal in the second half from Trinidad and Tobago’s Dennis Lawrence, and lost to Bristol Rover 2-1, following a brace from Richard Walker in the last three minutes.

In the English League Championship (Division 1), Jamaica Reggae Boyz striker Ricardo Fuller put the icing on the cake for Southampton in their 2-0 win over Millwall.

The home team lost Barbadian international Paul Ifill in the final minute of the first half.

Meantime, Bermuda international Shaun Goater saw his 59th penalty for Southend cancelled out by a striker two minutes later from Marc Richards that earned Barnsley a hard-fought 1-1 draw in League 1 (Division 2).

The result ended Southend’s run of five successive home victories.

And Jamaican international Paul Hall scored the second goal on half hour in Chesterfield’s 4-3 victory over Huddersfield.
