Police Stars n-ballers start strong


CASTRIES: Two-time defending champions Police Stars, of Trinidad and Tobago, made a sound start to their defence of the Helen of the West Netball championships with a dominant 55-17 victory over local team Shamrock Youth at the Vigie Multi-Purpose Sports Complex on Saturday night.


TT’s Defence Force, and TRAC, of St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), also registered solid wins on opening night.


The defending champions Police led 11-4, 28-4, 36-13 at the first three quarters of their match with goal shoot Beverley Hernandez sinking 21 of 26 attempts and goal attack Donna Charles 34 from 38.


For Shamrock Youth, Alison Anthony shot eight of 19 attempts and goal attack Faithline Theodore nine from 14.


In the second match of the night, TRAC beat St Lucia’s Orion 62-33, after leading at the quarter intervals 12-8, 31-14, 46-22.


Goal-shoot Annette King (35/47) and goal shoot Leena Lewis (27/34) were the scorers for TRAC.


Orion used three goal shoots and one goal attack.


Goal shoot Camille Brice scored six of 11 attempts and goal attack Rebecca Mathurin 19 of 32.


Goal shoot Natasha Charles was successful in all five of her attempts and Vanessa Daniel, also shooting, netted three from eight.


In the final match of the evening, Defence Force of Trinidad and Tobago swamped Sandals All Stars 69-10.


Defence Force led all quarters 16-3, 37-4, 51-6 and used three goal-shoots and two goal attacks during the encounter.


Goal shoot Karlene Sylvester netted 16 of 20 attempts and goal attack Kemanie James 17 from 24. Goal shoot Dianne Pierre shot 21 of 29 attempts, goal shoot Anastasia Wilson 10 from 11, and goal attack Lystra Zamore five from five.


Goal shoot Giovanni Lucien scored nine from 16 and goal attack Dane Charles one from three for Sandals All Stars.
