Army capture North FA Trophy

DEFENCE FORCE have won the first trophy to be decided in this year’s Media 21-sponsored Northern Football Association.

The Army-Coast Guard combination edged Queen’s Park 2-1 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo last night.

Prolific goalscorer Gary John put Defence Force on the way with a 53rd minute strike, and Curtis Thomas doubled the advantage on the hour. The Parkites never gave up trying but could only manage a consolation 83rd minute goal by Maurice Simpson.

On Sunday, the Defence Force Under-17 youngsters won the knockout series 4-3 on penalties after playing to a 0-0 draw with arch-rivals Superstar Rangers.

Cosmos Eagles scored a surprise 4-3 victory over last year’s league champions Medianet Orie 4-3 in the Superstar Cup.

Kerron Halls fired in a hat-trick and Nigeal Dean got the other goal for the winners. Quincy Charles doubled and Marlon Benjamin scored for Orie.

Maple advanced to the next round with a 2-0 shut out of Fire Service on goals by Keron Crick and Al Davidson.

But Queen’s Park needed penalties to kick Paragon out of the cup after they played to a 2-2 draw. Simpson scored a double for the Parkites while Roger Henry and Antonio Alleyne scored for the Caribana Boys who were outsted 4-3 from the penalty spot. St Francois Nationals moved ahead without kicking a ball when Cocorite United defaulted.
