TT Police Stars stay unbeaten in St Lucia


CASTRIES: Defending champions Police Stars of Trinidad and Tobago, secured two wins on Sunday to stay top of the standings after Day Two of play of the 2005 Helen of the West Netball Festival at the Vigie Multi-Purpose Sports Complex.


The two time defending champions first beat Orion of St Lucia in a morning fixture 56-22 leading at all quarters 19-8, 38-11, 47-17.


Goal shoot Beverley Hernandez scored 15 of 23 attempts and goal attack Donna Charles 23 from 27.


Guisher Grant also played as goal attack scoring 14 of 23 attempts, while Shaivaughn Skeete, the second goal attack, employed by Police Stars scored four from six attempts.


Orion’s scoring was led by goal shoot Camilla Brice (12/18), while goal attack Rebecca Mathurin (6/12) attempts.


Goal shoot Natasha Charles scored four of five tries.


Police Stars had an even more crucial win in the evening schedule when they beat rivals Defence Force of Trinidad and Tobago 38-29.


Police led at the intervals 10-6, 20-16, 28-23.


Goal shoot Beverly Hernandez scored 35 of 45 attempts and goal attack Donna Charles three from five.


For Defence Force, goal shoot Karlene Sylvester scored 12 of 18 attempts.


Goal attack/goal shoot Dianne Pierre nine from 17, goal attack Kamarie James four from six and goal attack Lystra Zamore four from five attempts.


Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) club champions Elite Strikers of St Lucia are the only other unbeaten team in the competition, winning their two matches Sunday after having the opening night Saturday off.


First, they had an easy 47-13 win over Shamrock Youth who proved to be no match for their more experienced opponents.


Elite were out front at the intervals 17-1, 28-3, 39-6.


Goal shoot Deidra Mathurin scored 36 of 48 attempts and goal attack Glata Peterson six from 15. Goal shoot Beverley Francis scored two of her four attempts and goal shoot/goal attack Roxanne Snyder scored three of five attempts. For Shamrock Youth, goal shoot Faithline Theodore scored five from 14 attempts and goal attack Denise Charles six from 16.


Allison Anthony (1/3) and Zalika Paul (1/3) were the other two scorers for Shamrock Youth.


Elite’s second victory came in the evening when they dominated Sandals All Stars 82-11, leading comfortably at all intervals 24-3, 44-7, 65-9.


Goal shoot/goal attack Glata Peterson converted 49 of 63 attempts and goal shoot/goal attack Beverley Francis 22 from 32.


Roxanne Snyder, also used as goal shoot/goal attack scored 11 of 17 attempts.


For Sandals, goal shoot Giavani Lucien scored eight from 15 and goal attack Dane Charles three from 12.


In the other two matches played Sunday, Defence Force beat Roy’s Inn TRAC, of St Vincent and the Grenadines 45-32. They led 16-10, 23-20, 34-23 at the quarter intervals.


Goal shoot Carleen Sylvester was successful in 35 of 48 attempts and goal attacks Kemanie James shot eight from 13 attempts and Dianne Pierre two from four.


For TRAC, goal shoot/goal attack Annette King scored 18 of 22 attempts, goal shoot/goal attack Leena Lewis seven from 11 and goal shoot Nicole King seven from nine.


TRAC were however victorious in their evening game when they defeated Shamrock Youth 53-30, leading at the quarter intervals 9-8, 27-14, 42-24.


Goal shoot Annette King had a high 80.4 shooting record scoring 41 of 51 attempts and goal attack Leena Lewis 11 from 14.


Shallista Davis shot one of two attempts.


Shamrock’s goal shoot/attack Allison Anthony scored 17 of 26 attempts, goal attack Denise Charles seven from 19 and goal shoot Jessica Mayers six from eight attempts.


Entering day three, Police lead the tournament with six points, Elite, Defence Force and TRAC each have four points while Orion, Shamrock Youth and Sandals All Stars are yet to pick up a point.


The Festival continued yesterday evening with more round robin preliminary matches.
