Khan back as TT cricket team manager
OMAR KHAN has been reportedly appointed manager of the Trinidad and Tobago cricket team for the upcoming Carib Beer regional four-day series. The selection of the Corporate Communications Manager of PowerGen was one of the first decisions made by the new executive of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board. Khan replaces Giles Antoine who managed the team at the recent 2005 President’s Cup regional one-day tournament in which Trinidad and Tobago, the defending champions failed to win a match. Under the previous administration Khan was the manager of the team that captured the President Cup last year against all the odds when it was staged in two phases in Guyana and Barbados.
However he fell out of favour shortly after that tournament and was removed under circumstances that were not made public. Khan then switched allegiance to the Friends of Cricket Group which emerged winners at the election of officers of the Cricket Board two Saturdays ago at Balmain. Former West Indies wicketkeeper Deryck Murray was elected the new president replacing Ellis Lewis who did not stand for re-election after serving one term of office. Also being given appointment by the new board was Allen Sammy who was chosen as one of Trinidad and Tobago’s delegate to the West Indies Cricket Board. The other will be Murray as president of the local cricket board.
Sammy replaces Richard DeSouza, who retained his position as treasurer at the recent elections but on the incumbent slate. When reached for confirmation of the appointments yesterday, new general secretary of the Cricket Board Forbes Persaud said he could not give any details because he was attending a wedding reception. When pressed, Persaud said that Newsday should call him back in 25 minutes but on doing so his cell phone switched incoming calls to the TSTT Message Centre.
