Holding says WI whitewash on cards

Behind two poor batting displays, West Indies crashed to a 379-run victory at the Gabba on Sunday and Holding pointed out that the series was likely to follow that of the 2000-01 edition when the Windies lost 5-0.

"I think we will see a similar result," the Melbourne Age quoted Holding as saying yesterday.

The West Indies struggled from the outset against Australia in the first Test with their batsmen failing to put up challenging totals in either innings, dismissed for 210 and 129.

Their bowlers also lacked the penetration to dismiss the Australians twice and captain Ricky Ponting cashed in, getting a century in both innings.

Holding, who played 60 Tests for the West Indies in their halcyon era, said the team was not capable of competing with a team like Australia.

"There are the same old problems we have seen for the last four or five years," Holding said.

"They are not good enough, simple as that, and as soon as they are faced with the best competition they just don’t know what to do." The West Indies will have the chance to regroup when they play Victoria at the weekend.
