Coach praises Yorke, Latapy

LEO BEENHAKKER has praised the attitude of Trinidad and Tobago football team captain Dwight Yorke and midfielder Russell Latapy.

He said the experienced players helped create and foster unity within the squad.

The Dutch-born Trinidad and Tobago team coach added that "the advantage is that most of (the team) are playing in Europe. We have, with Dwight and with Russell, two extraordinary players who can help me within the (team set-up)."

Beenhakker was speaking after the TT team’s practice session at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo on Tuesday evening.

With goalkeeper Shaka Hislop expected to join the team, Beenhakker revealed that the remaining 21 players, including goalkeeper Kelvin Jack, defender Brent Sancho and utility player Kenwyne Jones (who are all recovering from injuries) were passed fit yesterday morning and are all available for Saturday’s FIFA World Cup Final Round qualifier against Bahrain at the Mucurapo venue.

The return leg of the home-and-away qualifiers will take place next Wednesday at Manama, Bahrain.

Beenhakker stated that Tuesday evening’s session was used to get players acclimatised to the local conditions as well as getting them attuned to the strenuous work yesterday and today.

"It’s normal, a day after they travelled and some of them played a match on Sunday, like Russell," he said.

"It’s more preparation training, a little bit more co-ordination, playing together a little bit in general.

"From today we start training sessions much more in relation with the way we have to play on Saturday," he said.

When asked about his strategies for Saturday’s match Beenhakker said: "We don’t want to change anything. Why should I change anything?

"You saw what we did from the beginning of May until the last match against Mexico (on October 12)," he continued. "Little by little, the team was growing and playing better and better."
