Countdown to jockeys championship on

THE COUNTDOWN is on for this year’s jockeys championship. With just four more racing days left in the 2005 season, the battle for the title rages on between apprentice rider Joshua Stephen and Venezuelan Wilmer Galviz.

Only one winning ride separates the two, with Galviz ahead 40-39, with ex-champ Ricardo Jadoo holding an outside chance of topping them both. He has 33 winning rides.

Young Stephen (J) is on the fringe of local horseracing history.

Having already wrapped up the apprentice jockeys title, victory in the open jockeys category will make him the first to win both titles.

Look out for him with some plum rides on the forthcoming days.

Local racing takes a one-week holiday with a "dark" day on Saturday, but will resume in earnest on November 28 when the Caribbean Champion Stakes for three-year-olds with a purse of $100,000 at stake.

This race will be over 1800 metres, and will see a re-match of Royal Oak Derby winner Border Dispute and Crown Point, whom he denied the local Triple Crown and a $250,000 bonus.

Also on the programme will be the Stud Farm Association Breeders Stakes for the two-year-old "babes." This will be over a trip of 1200 metres and carries a purse of $75,000, and in this All For Java will be seeking to prove once and for all he is the best juvenile under saddle. Following this will be the Caribbean Sprint Championship in which it will be very foolhardy to oppose Man Of Class, but in the mood, Salsa Moves can make him step.

Third and final subscriptions for these races close tomorrow.
