Investigate Lara’s dismissals
MANOHAR RAMSARAN, a former Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs is calling for a thorough investigation into controversial dismissals of double world record-holder Brian Lara in the current West Indies tour of Australia. Lara was first given out Leg Before Wicket (LBW) to Brett Lee in the First Test in Sydney and then controversially caught behind off spinner Shane Warne in the Second Test in Hobart. This was a major setback for the left-hander after he had worked hard to play himself into the game following a lean spell with the bat. Ramsaran is calling on the world governing body for cricket, the International Cricket Council (ICC) to use the technology available to them in making decisions on dismissals, a move he says will serve to improve the game. "How in four innings the world number one is given out twice, two instances clearly not out and another where the benefit should have been in his favour?" Ramsaran asked yesterday. He also called on Lara to keep his chin up and said justice must be demanded for it to come. Ramsaran, the Member of Parliament for Chaguanas described the victory by the Australians over the West Indies as "hollow" although the Australians are considered the best in the world. Ramsaran also took the opportunity to congratulate batsman Dwayne Bravo on his scintillating century and an equally valuable knock by young wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin in the just concluded Second Test which the West Indies lost. The duo shared a partnership of 178 runs after Lara was given out for 45 after staging a recovery with Jamaican Marlon Samuel who was dismissed soon after. Ramsaran said Bravo and Ramdin showed the character and class which were expected from the older and more senior players on the team. According to Ramsaran, Trinidadians and Tobagonians must be proud to have quadruple Olympic medallist Ato Boldon, Dwight Yorke, Russell Latapy, Lara and now Bravo, Ramdhin, Darrel Brown and Marc Burns among others holding centre stage in the field of sports. He also congratulated the Soca Warriors on their achievement in securing a place in the 2006 Germany World Cup as well as the football Federation president Oliver Camps, Special Advisor Jack Warner, General-Secretary Richard Groden and coach Leo Beenhakker.
