Under-20 stars doing well in US

TRINIDAD and Tobago Under-20 women footballers Katrina Meyer and Maylee Attin-Johnson are doing splendidly in the United States, where they are currently enrolled on scholarships.

The duo returned home to join the Trinidad and Tobago youth team at the recent Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Under-20 qualifiers.

Meyer, a central defender, is majoring in accounting at the University of South Carolina Upstate.

Concerning the 2005 season with her school, Meyer said it wasn’t that well.

"The team wasn’t that great," she conceded. "But, hopefully next year, we’ll have a better team and do better."

The well-spoken Meyer added that she played the role of sweeper during the 2004 season but was used as a defensive midfielder this year.

The former Holy Name Convent, Port- of-Spain student noted that her new institution is "real nice."

"I’m enjoying it up there," she continued. "It will help me improve my game."

Attin-Johnson, who can play both attacking-midfielder and striker roles, completed her first year at Comberland University, Tennessee where she’s pursing sports management.

"Great, I must say," is how she describes her stay so far. "It’s been a learning experience and, so far, I’m loving it over there."

The easy-going Attin-Johnson added, "the people over there are very warm-hearted. They look after you and I feel very comfortable around them."

As far as her game is concerned, she confessed, "When I played up there, I played much better than when I came to this tournament.

"My level really dropped," she continued.

"I tried to pick it up in the third game against Suriname on Thursday night.

"I saw a little improvement but that’s not the level I’m playing at up there," she ended.
