Intruder shot dead near police station

An intruder who tried to attack a 79-year-old woman at her Cotton Hill home in St Clair on Monday night, was shot dead by her next door neighbour who heard her screams for help.

The dead man was identified as Gordon Flemming, 26, of La Sieva, Maraval. He had court matters pending for sexual offences.

Police reports revealed that Feroza Badal of Cotton Hill, St Clair, was at home at 10.30 pm, when she heard a noise coming from her living room. Badal raised an alarm which alerted her neighbour Warrick Varillo.

Armed with a licensed shotgun, Varillo carefully approached the house, which is located very near to the St Clair Police Station, and was confronted by a man armed with a cutlass. Varillo fired a shot at the man, striking him once in the chest.

The shotgun used in the shooting death was seized, and Varillo was interviewed.
