Emulate the Soca Warriors

GLASGOW: Trinidad and Tobago defender Marvin Andrews urged his Rangers teammates to take a leaf out of Trinidad and Tobago’s book in their approach to last night’s European Champions League against Porto in Portugal.

Rangers faced a serious injury crisis heading into the crucial match.

Striker Thomas Buffel will not be risked, although he did offer to play after missing Saturday’s defeat by Celtic, and embattled Rangers boss Alex McLeish was already without attacking players Nacho Novo, Dado Prso and Federico Nieto.

Defenders Julien Rodriguez and Olivier Bernard are also missing, so McLeish has called up Steven Smith and Danny N’Guessan from the reserves.

But Andrews, who helped Trinidad and Tobago recover from a near hopeless position earlier this year to qualify for next year’s World Cup Finals, insists Rangers must show the same belief the TT Soca Warriors exhibited to secure a favourable result.

"We have to keep believing and if we do, there is every chance for us to make it through to the next phase. At one point, no one had the slightest hope that Trinidad and Tobago would qualify for the World Cup, but the fact really is that we made it. " Andrews said.

"At the moment, we are not having much luck here at Rangers but if we keep the faith, then we will come out of it stronger," said Andrews, a week after TT beat Bahrain 1-0 in a play-off match to earn a World Cup Final spot for the first time in their history.

Rangers are struggling— a distant fourth position— in the Scottish Premier League after an uncharacteristically tame start to the 2005-2006 season.

A victory in the Dragao Stadium for McLeish’s side, combined with an Inter Milan win at home against Artmedia Petrzalka, will guarantee Rangers make it into the knockout stage— a first for any Scottish Club.
