Mom, baby still in car
VALENE LYNCH and her nine-month-old baby Nyomi spent another night in the backseat of the blue Renault car on Enid Street, Marabella. Newsday visited the woman and her baby yesterday to find them sitting quietly in the backseat of the vehicle. Nyomi had just woke up. Newsday’s story about Lynch’s plight captured the hearts of many yesterday who volunteered to assist the mother and her baby. Newsday’s phones were jammed with callers offering Lynch and Nyomi a home, foodstuff and clothing. However, Lynch told Newsday yesterday that no one had actually visited her up to late yesterday. Clutching Nyomi in her arms, Lynch emerged from the vehicle and said, "I wish we would be able to spend Christmas in a comfortable place." Lynch spoke of the hardships she has faced since age 17. She reiterated her longing for a warm bed to cuddle and sleep with her baby. Good Samaritan Maureen Rodriguez had rescued Lynch from the streets one night, when the woman showed up carrying baby Nyomi in one hand and all her worldly possessions in the other. Yesterday, the car took on the look of a bedroom, with its dashboard transformed into shelves on which the baby’s diapers and bottles are stored. Newsday learnt that a social welfare officer from the Ministry of Social Development plans to visit Lynch today.
