Eye in the Sky still unmanned

A manpower shortage in the Port-of-Spain Division has led to the Eye in the Sky at the Brian Lara Promenade being unmanned.

Police sources revealed that the unit is hoisted each day to convince the public that it is utilised by police officers, but the unit is not being used for the purpose for which it was intended.

Government purchased three units.

Police officers told Sunday Newsday that the money used to purchase the three units could have been utilised elsewhere.

One of the units was placed behind Westmall for several months.

The third unit was placed in a car park at Chaguanas.

Some retired senior police officers said yesterday that the units and even the blimp purchased by Government at a cost of $26 million should never have been purchased in the first place.

The retired officers pointed out that the Eye in the Sky and the blimp cannot assist in making any meaningful dent in the rampant crime situation in the country.

The retired officers believe that not even the Stephen Mastrofsky recommendations will assist in dealing with crime.

They feel that the key to solving crime is to identify who the criminals are in all police divisions and place those persons under round the clock surveillance.
