Sanguinette is Parkites Player of Year
JUSTIN SANGUINETTE was named Player of the Year at the Queen’s Park Cricket Club annual award ceremony. Sanguinette, who was also named the club’s Squash Player of the Year, received his award during the gala presentation at Pier 1, Williams Bay, Chaguaramas, on Friday night.. After he was given the nod, ahead of Ricardo Paty (cricket), Winston Boodoo (tennis), Bishada Anthony (football) and Nicholas Da Costa (hockey), Sanguinette said, "I feel honoured because I’m a small, little man and I beat all the big people." Coached by ex-national squash player Brian Jackson, Sanguinette was indecisive of what his future plans were, but is keen to make a name for himself in the sport. Paty was named Senior Cricketer of the Year while Kieron Pollard, who was named in a 20-man West Indies training squad for the 2006 World Youth Cup, was the Junior Cricketer of the Year. Paty, Pollard, West Indies all-rounders Dwayne Bravo and Ricardo Powell, as well as 21-year-old batsman Nicholson Baptiste were also named as the Five Cricketers of the Year. National Under-19 off-spinner Sunil Narine, who took 31 wickets in the WI Youth tournament in St Vincent, was given the Sir Thompson Trophy as the Youth Personality of the Year. Earlier in the evening, the Club inducted four persons as honorary members, ex-national and West Indies cricketer Ann Browne-John; Yvette Gomez, wife of ex-TT and WI all-rounder and administrator Gerry Gomez; legendary sporting administrator Lystra Lewis and 1976 Olympic gold medallist Hasely Crawford. This was the first time women were allowed membership in the club in its 114-year history, since members voted to break with this century-long tradition of all-male inclusion. The Club also honoured four persons who recently received national awards, retired Justice Lionel Jones (Chaconia Medal Gold), Edward Henry Sealy (Chaconia Medal Silver), Sedley Joseph (Hummingbird Medal Gold) and John Woosley Antoine (Public Service Medal of Merit). Among the many dignitaries in attendance were ex-President and Prime Minister Arthur NR Robinson, Ambassador Roy Austin, India High Commissioner JS Sapra, Port of Spain Mayor Murchison Brown, United States and territorial board presidents Tony Marshall (Barbados), Jackie Hendricks (Jamaica) and Carlisle Powell (Leeward Islands).
