Jamaat men get bail
Two of the Jamaat Al Muslimeen members charged with possession of a rifle and ammunition were granted bail yesterday in the sums of $350,000 each. Tahir Ali, 19, and Abdool Basit, 23, will also have to report to the St James Police Station every Friday before 11 am. The men were arrested on November 10, 2005, shortly after their leader, Imam Yasin Abu Bakr, was arrested and charged with terrorism. The two were allegedly held in a room at the Muslimeen compound on Mucurapo Road, St James, during a joint police/army raid. Attorney Leon Gokool was able to persuade Justice Herbert Volney to grant the men bail yesterday, despite much resistance from the State. Gokool had been trying to get the judge to grant bail since last Friday. On instruction, special prosecutor Dana Seetahal has been resisting the granting of bail to the men.
