Woman sues THA over gospel concert monies
A SAN FERNANDO woman has sued the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) over the assembly’s alleged failure to provide her with a breakdown on the cost of staging the 2004-2005 gospel festival. Geeta Ramdhan, of Harris Street, was granted leave by Justice Peter Jamadar in the San Fernando High Court to seek judicial review of the THA’s refusal to furnish her with the figures on expenditure. When Ramdhan’s request was not met by the THA, she sought the information on the authority of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). In an affidavit filed with her lawsuit by attorney Anand Ramlogan, Ramdhan stated that she is a social researcher conducting research on religious discrimination and inequity by State agencies in Trinidad and Tobago. Ramdhan stated that she posted her application under the amended FOIA on September 5 to THA Chief Secretary, Orville London. In the application, Ramdhan requested a list of monies spent by the THA on the gospel festival. Ramdhan also requested a list of performers hired to perform at the festival and the monies each were paid. The reason for her requests, Ramdhan contended, was because the THA had been using State funds to promote Christianity while no corresponding treatment was afforded to other religions. Ramdhan claimed that her request for the figures was not answered. Ramdhan is seeking an order of mandamus to compel the THA to provide her with the information under the FOIA. She is also seeking a declaration that she is entitled to the information as set out in her application. Ramdhan wants a High Court judge to direct the THA to provide her with the requested information free of charge within seven days.
