No-nonsense Farah regains Judo crown

AFTER an absence from the local Judo scene for four years, Kimberley Farah of Queen’s Park Judo Club regained her National Women’s Judo title when she defeated last year’s champion Gnna (pronounced Jenna) Charles by ippon (full points) with an arm-lock in the Trinidad and Tobago Judo Association (TTJA) National Championships last Saturday at Jean Pierre Complex.

The tournament featured partici-pants from Queen’s Park Judo Club (QPJC), Arima Judo Club (AJC), Malick Judo Club (MJC) and Southern Academy of Martial Arts (SAMA).

The main highlight of the tournament was the dominance of Caurdius Trotman of Malick Judo Club who won both heavyweight and open divisions in convincing style.

The 22-year-old former student of Malick Senior Comprehensive defeated all of his opponents by ippon en route to taking the national heavyweight category.

In the open category he continued his dominance with raw power, which none of his opponents could match and won all of his matches by ippon. With this victory he is considered as the strongest judoka in the country.

Trotman was also given the Most Outstanding Judoka award of the Championships, which turned out to be an excellent day for him as it was also his birthday.

Another highlight was the return of Judo tigress Kimberley Farah of Queen’s Park Judo Club who regained her national ladies open title by defeating last year’s champion Gnna Charles of AJC by ippon by way of an arm-lock.

The return of Farah also marked the return of a competitive ladies category, which lacked interest in the past few years due to the small number of women that participated at tournaments.

Other notable performances came from Clifford Parris of QPJC who retained his lightweight (73kg and under) title by defeating arch rival, Keron Bourne of SAMA by pinning him for an ippon (25 seconds).

Bourne also performed well in the open category by winning his second silver medal of the evening. For his skillful execution of techniques and the energy he exuded at the Championships he was appropriately awarded a trophy for the Best Fighting Spirit.
