‘PM’ Dookeran to tackle crime

POLITICAL Leader of the Opposition UNC Winston Dookeran assured a West Indian audience in New York that as the next Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, he will do whatever it takes to provide safety and security to all citizens of this country. Dookeran revealed this during an address last Friday at a public meeting at Tropical Gardens, Atlantic Avenue, New York City. Scores of concerned West Indians, mainly Trinidadians and Guyanese nationals, received an update of the politics in TT. The key message Dookeran delivered was laying an unshakable foundation for the next generation. The former Central Bank governor also paid tribute to the Soca Warriors, Brian Lara and UNC Chairman Basdeo Panday for their valuable contributions to national development.

The release said Dookeran also spoke about recent developments and the new politics for the country. Another area of interest was out-of-control crime in TT and the crowd applauded enthusiastically when the UNC Political Leader informed them of an earlier meeting with security personnel. Out of that meeting, Dookeran and a team of local security experts expect to develop measures which could help to arrest rising crime. The political leader stated that now that he had taken up the mantle of leadership, he will work towards consolidating and uniting the party and country. He examined the present state of the nation especially the social divisions in society and high levels of corruption. This, he said, highlighted the politics of the past and the need for new politics which he promised to deliver.

Dookeran said his “new politics” looked towards a brighter future for the next generation and a better Trinidad and Tobago. The St Augustine MP pointed out that a major distinction between the ruling PNM and the UNC was that the PNM’s aim was to make everyone a client of the State thereby reducing the citizens to “eternal poverty.” Dookeran explained that the new politics would if necessary, include compromises, concessions and a new coalition of political interests.
