John D to run 40th PNM convention
People’s National Movement (PNM) chairman, Franklin Khan, is expected to take a backseat and allow vice-chairman John Donaldson to preside at this weekend’s 40th PNM convention. Sources told Newsday that in light of the recent charges laid against Khan, it was deemed inappropriate for him to preside over the national convention. Khan, the Member of Parliament for Ortoire/Mayaro, is facing six charges of misconduct in public office. According to a release from Balisier House, the two-day convention, which takes place on December 10 and 11 at the Chaguaramas Convention Centre, is expected to be one of the largest in the country’s history because of increased membership applications and the mobilisation, which has begun across the newly created 41 constituencies. As a result, the statement said, special arrangements were being made to accommodate the large number of party members and supporters expected to converge on the convention centre this weekend. Almost all of the executive positions within the party will be contested and the deadline for nominations is today. The positions up for grabs are lady vice chairman, assistant general secretary, treasurer, elections officer, educational officer, public relations officer, field officer, youth officer (male), youth officer (female), party welfare officer and operations officer. This year’s theme is "PNM — Strong Families, Strong Communities, A Strong Nation."
