Dookeran holds talks with UNDP in New York
UNC Political Leader Winston Dookeran met a team from the United Nations Development Programme yesterday at the UNDP headquarters in Manhattan. According to a release, Dookeran had been invited to discuss development issues, especially progress with the Millennium Development Goals. (In January, 2005 the Millennium Project- Investing in Development, had been launched in Trinidad and Tobago). The Millennium Development goals will allow countries to develop strategies to meet specific development targets. The targets include crime and security, health and nutrition, education and other matters. At the meeting, Dookeran advised that a high priority should be given to improving the human development index and to re-building social capital in depressed communities. Another priority identified at the meeting was the need for building negotiating capacity in trade negotiations and the financing of development in a new way, including the energy sector. Attending the meeting were Eric Kashambuzi, Senior Policy Adviser; Thomas Gittens, Senior Programme Adviser and Kamal Malhotra, Senior Adviser on Inclusive Globalisation Bureau for Development Policy.
