Ex-Guyana football coach under arrest

FORMER Guyana football player and coach, Lennox Arthur has been arrested and is being held by police for questioning in the killing of Thomas "Tommy" Orderson, former Honorary Secretary of the Georgetown Football League (GFL).

According to a reliable source, Arthur confessed to the Police that he did in fact threaten Orderson, but insisted that he had no knowledge or part in the killing which occurred on Sunday night.

Orderson’s body was discovered near his parked car on the Sea Wall Road and with two gunshots to the chest.

Speaking yesterday, president of the GFL Odinga Lumumba disclosed that he and his executive were aware of a threat by Arthur.

"I know he has threatened ‘Tommy’ who reported the threat to the GFL and the GFF (Guyana Football Federation). In fact the GFF wrote Mr Arthur a warning letter telling him to cease and desist."

Lumumba said he was informed this matter came up at last Saturday’s General Council meeting of the GFF which "Tommy" attended, as well as the GFF president Colin Klass.

The GFL boss added: "Mr Arthur is always threatening people. Mr Arthur has threatened Mr Orderson in my presence and other league officials."

Meanwhile, the GFL issued a press release on Tuesday afternoon pointing out four decisions made by the executive and which will be discussed at an emergency General Council meeting.

The GFL’s Executive Committee decided that teams be withdrawn from the Mayor’s Cup which is co-ordinated by Arthur.

They are requesting that the GFF immediately hand over the complaints sent by Orderson against Arthur to the GFF’s Disciplinary Committee, and that Arthur, as it relates to his involvement in football and the various historical allegations, should be suspended immediately from all relationship with formal football, until the end of the Disciplinary Committee’s investigation.

The GFL top brass also wants the GFF to suspend the present Mayor’s Cup tournament until the investigations by the Police Force clear Arthur of involvement in the murder of Orderson.
