Bold As Brass in Stewards’ Cup

BOLD AS BRASS appears trained to the minute to take this year’s B Mobile Stewards’ Cup on Arima Race Club Day 37 programme at Santa Rosa Park, Arima, today.

But it is not an open and shut case for Merlin Samlalsingh’s outstanding three-year-old chestnut colt in the 1200 metres race which carries a purse of $100,000.

There are quite a few top sprinters holding this engagement including among them the bridesmaid of the past two years Miss Lover Lover who has been showing good form on the gallops.

This one will test the knowledge of turfites to the limit especially as Man Of Class, the only locally-bred runner in the field, seeking to recoup losses after disqualification last time out.

Dinner Silence, and the quick-stepping Marci’s Dreamer along with Invincibility and the ex-two-time "Horse of the Year" Sugar Mike will warrant some consideration.

The co-feature WMJX 100.5 Imported Juvenile Sprint Trophy over 1200 metres also brings together a nice crop of young speedsters.

Any of the seven two-year-olds listed to go to post can turn out to be the winner, but there was a lot to like about Bright King in winning his only start to date.

Indian Izzi has been lighting up the track on mornings from the time he landed, and Enchanted Lake who created a favourable impression in also winning her debut race. Stravinsky’s Secret has also made a forward move in his form and then Ice Timber has been letting off much steam.

Another race which will warrant turfites’ attention is the 1200 metres Double Helix race for local two-year-olds, as we look toward the St James and St Ann’s Stakes.

Under the microscope will be Sara’s Music, convincingly beaten three times by All For Java who is not entered, Magnificat who has gone the right way after her debut victory and the Freshly Squeezed/Lady Of The Moment offspring, Magic Moments.

These must be respected in the race worth a total of $18,000.

On a 10-race programme co-sponsored by TSTT, All Sports Promotion Limited and Barbados Jazz Festival, there are races chockful of excitement. Adding to the excitement is the struggle between Venezuelan rider Wilmer Galviz and local apprentice Joshua Stephen for the national championship title, with the former holding a 44-41.

The sponsors are giving the groom of the winner of the B Mobile Stewards’ Cup $1,000, while groom of winner of the WMJX 100.5 Imported Juvenile Sprint gets $500.

And the champion jockey of the day will receive $1,000 based on a points system — six points for a win; four for second and two for third.
