Latapy: TT no pushovers

EDINBURG: Despite being grouped with two strong European nations, Trinidad and Tobago midfielder Russell Latapy says his side will not be intimidated when they do battle in next year’s World Cup in Germany.

In Friday’s draw in Leipzig, TT were placed in Group "B" along with England and Sweden, and South Americans Paraguay.

"It is a fantastic for us to be in the finals, but we have said to ourselves that we do not want to go there just to make up the numbers," the 37-year old Falkirk star told BBC Scotland.

"We want to give good performances and, if we can win matches and pick up points, that is what we would like to do."

He added: "It is going to be difficult but we will put our best foot forward and whatever we get from it will be a bonus."

England have one World Cup title after beating then West Germany 4-2 when London hosted the event in 1966 while Sweden finished third in the 1994 World Cup in the United States. Latapy, who has plied his trade for top Scottish Premiership club Rangers along with top flight Portugese side FC Porto, said he anticipated clashing with several of the top players from England and Sweden.

"It is the biggest football tournament in the world, obviously, so you want to be involved," Latapy said.

"These are top players and it would be fun playing against these guys but we have a lot of talented individuals as well. It is a challenge we are relishing."
