More cases coming to Industrial Court

THE foyer of the Industrial Court building on St Vincent Street, Port-of-Spain was transformed into a virtual auditorium last Friday morning, but for a special reason.

The area was used to facilitate the first ever awards ceremony of the Court.

This function was also the last of four activities undertaken to mark the 40th anniversary of the Court.

A number of staff members were honoured for their years of "loyal and devoted service over many years."

Court members and special invitees to the function heard Court president, His Honour Addison Khan pay high tribute to the honorees.

Although he singled out Court Registrar Noel Inniss for special mention, Khan said each and every staff member was important.

"Each has his or her own peculiar function to perform."

This tribute applied to court members as well, explained the president.

About Inniss, Khan said: "He is not only competent, efficient, dedicated and committed, but he is without any doubt whatsoever, one of the best registrars the Court has ever had. He is in the mould of top class registrars like the late Conrad Douglin, the first Registrar of the Court and Herbert Soverall, both of whom were elevated to the Bench."

Soverall has since been made a Member of the Court — a judge in his own right.

During his address, Khan noted that there was a tremendous increase in the number of cases that are referred to the Court "and it is our duty to hear and determine these cases expeditiously."

"There can be no justification for delayed judgments, because unduly delayed judgments amount to a denial of justice. We must have compassion upon those who wait upon us for justice, by delivering our judgments promptly."

Referring to the San Fernando arm of the court which was established earlier this year, Khan said it has assisted in giving speedier justice.
