Boy, 14, drowns at Los Iros
A FAMILY outing to Los Iros Beach in Palo Seco turned tragic for a Central Trinidad family on Sunday, after a 14-year-old boy drowned. Coast Guard divers found the body of Kerwyn Ward on the shore —half mile away from where he was last seen. Ward, a pupil of the Carapichaima Senior Secondary School, went to the beach with his uncle, Tex Davis, and other relatives and friends. The family lives at Waterloo Road, Carapichaima. Recalling the incident, Ward’s cousin, Kerron Prime, told Newsday that Ward, Davis and other relatives were bathing in chest-high waters at about 3 pm, when Davis went to retrieve a beach ball which floated into deep water. He said Davis got into difficulties, but relatives were able to bring him safely to shore. Prime said it was during the commotion that a female friend who had gone along with them realised that Ward was missing. "I was at the beach front when I heard the girl shouting that Kerwyn was missing," Prime said. On hearing this, Prime added, Davis attempted to go into the water to search for Ward, but they held him back because they were afraid he would get into difficulties again. Prime said they immediately called out to the lifeguards who dived into the water and searched for Ward, but to no avail. PC Francis of the Erin Police Station is continuing investigations.
