Samuels cops lion’s share of awards
KINGSTON: West Indies middle-order batsman Marlon Samuels walked away with the bulk of the awards when the Melbourne Cricket Club held its annual Presentation and Awards Ceremony. The elegant right-hander, who toured Australia with the West Indies before leaving early because of a knee injury, copped awards for the Most Runs, the Best Batting Average, the Most Wickets and the Best Bowling Average. He also took a special award for having taken eight wickets or more in an innings trundling his off-spin, his best eight for 27 against Jamaica Defence Force. He took 34 wickets in five games at a remarkable average of 7.65 runs apiece in the domestic championship, and scored 260 runs. He also did well at higher levels, topping the Jamaica batting average at 72 in their double-triumph in the Carib Beer Series, and he also struck a superb double century for the West Indies in a tour match in Australia against Queensland in October. The 24-year-old Samuels made his test debut against Australia in the Adelaide Third Test on the Caribbean side’s 2000-2001 tour down under. He has appeared in 21 Test matches for the West Indies, scoring 930 runs at an average of 28.18. Samuels has also played 57 One-Day International (ODI) matches, scoring 1,448 runs at an average of 31.48. He has 35 ODI wickets at 40.40 runs apiece.
