Scotland predicts W/Cup surprise

EDINBURGH: Trinidad and Tobago’s Jason Scotland has reiterated the view of several of his national football team members that the World Cup in Germany next year will not be seen as a vacation.

"We are not going to Germany to party and relax. We will be training hard and aiming to do well," the 26-year old striker told Scotland’s Sunday Herald.

"All eyes will be on us in the World Cup. We will put our best foot forward and show them that we are here, we are a small country, but a big footballing nation."

Scotland played a key role in TT qualification for the sporting showpiece after a strong performance in the second leg of the home-and-away play off against Bahrain which the Warriors won 1-0.

With his country being only the second Caribbean English-speaking to qualify for the Finals, Scotland said it was a dream come true for him.

"Of course I might not get to the World Cup myself yet, but at least I am in with a chance," Scotland said.

"This is a dream come true for myself, all the players and the supporters. We have a good bunch of players and we always thought we could do it."

And Scotland, who represents St Johnstone’s in the Scottish First Division, says that TT will not be intimidated by the likes of England, Paraguay or Sweden in their group. "The Scottish First Division may not be of such a high standard, but it is a matter of having good habits and making sure you are switched on, to keep a high standard for yourself," he pointed out.

"If you do that you will be sharp enough to face international strikers. I will probably be a busy man, but our other players will rise to the occasion and I think we could surprise a few people."
