Guardian Holdings Regatta sails off

DINGHY SAILORS from Argentina, Brazil, Grenada, Martinique, Guadeloupe, St Lucia, Antigua and Barbados will be challenging the best of Trinidad and Tobago when the third annual Southern Caribbean Regatta sails off today at Hart’s Cut Bay, Chaguaramas. The three-day event will be held under the auspices of the Trinidad and Tobago Sailing Association (TTSA) with Guardian Holdings Group as the official sponsors. Leading the local charge are Matthew Scott and Andy Alkins, two of TT’s top dinghy sailors.

Scott was a silver medalist at the 2005 World Optimist Dinghy Championships in Switzerland. Stiff competition is expected to come from from Brazil’s Diego Montautti, the runner-up at the European Optimist; Antigua’s Carl James, rated as the region’s top laser sailor; and Argentina’s Tomas (Tommy) Brauer. The opening ceremony took place at the TTSA headquarters last evening with addresses from Sport and Youth Affairs Minister Roger Boynes, TTSA president Jerome McQuilkin, Regatta Race Officer Michael Rostant, vice-president Corporate Communications Guardian Holdings Maria McMillan and Chief Regatta Judge Donald Stollmeyer.
