Harbour Master was the pick at gallops

NEWCOMER Harbour Master was the pick of the horses seen at gallops at Santa Rosa Park, Arima, yesterday. This one set a rapid pace for a 400 metres gallop clocked in a handy 25.01 seconds on the sloppy track, made so by persistent rains. Also having a good workout was the speedy Daylight Reprized who returned a handy one minute 07.75 for a 1000 metres spin. Sing The Blues and Ice Timber, galloping together were clocked in one minute 08.36 seconds for a similar spin. Aticka had a handy run over 400 metres timed  in 27.12 seconds, but most other stables decided to keep their charges indoors away from the sloppy track.

With racing taking a break tomorrow, trainers are playing it cautious with their horses especially with the showers tumbling down. Meanwhile, Horse of the Year candidate Top Of The Class had first subscriptions of $500 paid for him to race in the Starlight Stakes for West Indian-bred four-year-olds and over to be run off on February 4. This race is over 1350 metres. Also among the eight horses for which connections paid the first subscription are Man Of Class, another Horse of the Year contender, and speedy stablemate Salsa Moves. First subscriptions of $400 were also paid for the triple crown and Champion Stakes winner to race in the Arima Race Club Cup Handicap over 1800 metres. Here he will likely face two-time “Horse of the Year”  Sugar Mike last year’s Derby runner-up Crown Point and newcomer Peace Offering.
