None but Top Of The Class for top horse
WILL the Trinidad and Tobago Racing Authority name Top Of The Class the "Horse of the Year" this time. Two years ago, when as a three-year-old the son of Freshly Squeezed/Crescendo accomplished the feat of winning the Triple Crown and then the Champion Stakes to give his connections the $1 million CLICO prize, he was overlooked in preference to Sugar Mike. The announcement raised eyebrows then but on a double-check of performances during the season, some turfites relented. Now the Glenn Mendez-trained five-year-old chestnut horse have placed himself into the drivers’ seat once more, winning six of his eight starts including victory over Sugar Mike in the Guardian Holdings Gold Cup on Boxing Day, December 27. This year, the TTRA have decided to bring the annual Jetsam Awards of Champions to the turfites on January 28. To the general rank and file Top Of The Class is the obvious choice. But just for argument sake, the performance of unbeaten two-year-old boss All For Java must be seriously considered. This juvenile have won all six of his starts clocking some excellent times with many lengths to spare his runners-up at the finish. Then a lot can be said of the creole sprinter Man Of Class who seems to be getting better with age like good French wine. A sprint specialist, the six-year-old son of Bandsman/Touch Of Class won six of 11 outings and was out of the frame only on three occasions including his last two starts when he apparently trained off. But all signs point to Top Of The Class this time, however.
