Local cricket gets shot in arm
THE Trinidad and Tobago regional cricket revival got a big shot in the arm yesterday with a resounding victory by 282 runs against Jamaica yesterday at the University of the West Indies Ground at St Augustine. It was an encouraging allround team effort by the homesters led by experienced captain Daren Ganga who were playing their second match in the 2005 regional cricket series against the defending league champions led by Wavell Hinds. The foundation for the deserved victory was laid by Ganga on the first day with a fighting innings of 93 and on the second day by young talented wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin who made the top score in the match, an undefeated 125. Hard-hitting allrounder Richard Kelly also produced a robust half century while Gregory Mahabir looked solid in the second innings with another useful contribution. Then the Trinidad and Tobago bowlers went to work with leg spinner Dave "Tadpole" Mohammed claiming nine wickets in the match — four in the first innings and five in the second to prove that he is still at the top of his game. Mohammed got great support from allrounder Dwayne Bravo and medium pacer Rayad Emrit. The Jamaicans were undone by a better team but they can take consolation from the performances of Marlon Samuels who played brilliantly for a first innings half century and Gareth Breese who was equally impressive with the ball.
