Bajans complete 10-wicket win

BRIDGETOWN: Fast bowler Fidel Edwards completed a four-wicket haul yesterday as Barbados rushed to a ten-wicket victory over Jamaica less than an hour into the fourth and final day of the Carib Beer Series cricket match at the Three Ws Oval.

Jamaica, resuming their second innings on 310 for eight, were bowled out for 319. West Indies ace Edwards and his pace mate Ian Bradshaw shared the two remaining wickets.

Edwards, in his first match of the season following mild shin splints, took four for 75. The 23-year-old, who took three for 29 to help rout Jamaica for 129 in their first innings, earned the "Man of the Match" award.

Left-armer Bradshaw grabbed three for 82.

Edwards gained a leg before wicket verdict against Nikita Miller, and Bradshaw claimed Jerome Taylor to a spooned catch to swiftly end Jamaica’s resistance.

Barbados, set 30 to win, powered to their target without losing a wicket.

Wicket-keeper Patrick Browne, promoted to open in the absence of injured Wayne Blackman, stroked five fours in an attractive 21 not out. Dale Richards scored an undefeated nine.

Barbados moved to the top of the six-team table with 24 points from three matches.

Jamaica captain Wavell Hinds blamed poor batting on the first day for his team’s demise, which ensured that their defence of the Carib Beer Cup ended in failure. "We batted very poorly in the first innings and we were always behind the eight-ball, playing catch-up cricket," Hinds said.

Ryan Hinds, the Barbados skipper, singled out all-rounder Dwayne Smith as the key performer for his side.

The dynamic all-rounder smack-ed six sixes and six fours in 94 off 63 balls and claimed three wickets with his medium pace.

"Dwayne has been sensational in this match," Hinds said.
