Grasscutter killed on highway

A GRASSCUTTER was killed while two other Ministry of Works employees miraculously escaped injury yesterday morning when a car ran off the Solomon Hochoy Highway near the Claxton Bay flyover.

Surajbally Kurasingh, 44, died on the spot when the car struck him. His body was thrown 104 feet into the bushes from the point of impact. When Newsday arrived on the scene shortly after the accident occurred at 6.50 am, the car, a blue Honda Civic, was near Kurasingh’s body. Driver of the vehicle, Kishal Rampartap, 22, the son of reigning Chutney Soca Monarch, Heeralal Rampartap, escaped with slight injuries. Kurasingh, of Clark Road, Penal, was cutting grass at the side of the northbound lane with two other ministry employees.

According to a police report, Rampartap was driving his car on the north-bound lane at 6.50 am, when he lost control of the vehicle. The car ran off the road about 500 feet before the flyover.

Eyewitnesses told police that when the car swerved off the highway, two brushcutters scampered away, but the car rammed head-on into Kurasingh who apparently did not see the vehicle coming.
