Heavy rain holds up Castries match
CASTRIES: Rain held up the start of play yesterday in the Carib Beer Series cricket match between the Windward Islands and the Leeward Islands at the Mindoo Phillip Park. No play was possible in the pre-lunch session and the prospects for the rest of the day looked doubtful after overnight and early morning rain left the outfield soggy. There were further showers and heavily overcast skies up to lunch, making the possibility of play yesterday afternoon remote. The match was crucial to both teams, which along with Guyana are fighting to grab a place in the semi-finals of the six-team tournament. Barbados are leading with 24 points, followed by Trinidad and Tobago with 18 and Jamaica with 12. Guyana and the Leeward Islands are next with nine points each, and the Windward Islands are at the bottom with six points. The weather system of heavy seasonal rains currently affecting St Lucia has lead to severe flooding in the eastern Caribbean and in Guyana.
