Dialysis woes at Mt Hope
PATIENTS AT the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC), Mt Hope have had their dialysis treatment time reduced because one machine is out of service. Five out of six machines are working at the haemodialysis clinic. Three dialysis shifts are done at EWMSC which run between the hours of 7 am and 9 pm. Innis Toussaint told Sunday Newsday he is supposed to have dialysis three days weekly, four hours per session. But his time has been reduced by half an hour. He said there are other dialysis patients who are being dialysed only two days weekly. "This is causing a lot of build up, making us more sick. This is bad for the health, we need more machines." Toussaint said two kidney failure patients recently died. He claimed the Filipino nurses who were assigned to the dialysis clinic have "nothing to do" because there are insufficient machines. "It seems like they are playing games with out lives." The Corporate Communications Manager of the North Central Regional Health Authority, Charmaine Codrington said a part was ordered for the machine which stopped working and it would be delivered by Tuesday. She said the eight dialysis machines ordered for EWMSC were "expected soon."
